The Beauty and Tradition of the Ketubah
A ketubah is more than just a marriage contract—it is a centuries-old tradition that symbolizes love, commitment, and the sacred bond of marriage in Jewish life. Rooted in Jewish law, the ketubah is written in Aramaic—the spoken language of ancient Israel and Judea—emphasizing its role as a legal rather than a religious document. It outlines the responsibilities...of the groom toward the bride, offering both legal and financial protections. Traditionally signed by witnesses before the chuppah, read aloud during the wedding, and later displayed in the couple’s home, a ketubah is both a meaningful document accompanying the couple on their journey together and a treasured piece of Jewish art.
My introduction to ketubah-making began with a family request. My cousin’s fiancée asked me to create an original ketubah as a wedding gift. I had never heard of a ketubah before, this was years before the internet, so I had to find out what a ketubah was, what they looked like as well as teach myself Hebrew lettering, With the creative input of the my cousin and his fiancée I produced a piece that they cherished. One commission led to another, and soon, what started as a single artwork became a full-time artistic and financial endeavor.
Original, Custom Ketubot
Each ketubah I create is entirely unique, blending artistic traditions from Europe, the Middle East, and places that hold special meaning for each couple. Many couples choose locations which represent beautiful and loving moments to them. Whether inspired by ancient Ketubot or modern personal stories, every design reflects the couple’s love and respect for their culture and heritage. My oil-painted Ketubot on canvas are durable, easy to transport, and made to last a lifetime—just like the love they celebrate.
Beyond weddings, my work has also found a special place in milestone celebrations. Many families commission anniversary Ketubot to honor parents and grandparents on their 30th, 40th 50th, or even 60th anniversaries—a heartfelt gift commemorating decades of love and devotion.
Creating each ketubah is both an artistic and spiritual experience for me. I feel deeply connected to the tradition of ketubah-making and honored to be part of so many couples’ special day.
